Barrier-Free Odessa: New Initiatives for People with Disabilities

During a session of the Odessa City Council, deputies approved new initiatives under the program «Barrier-Free Odessa».

Among the main updates: this year a special beach for individuals with disabilities is set to open at the 11th station of the Great Fountain.

Odessa's mayor, Gennady Trukhanov, noted that the preliminary cost for the capital repair works is estimated at 21.3 million UAH. Funds were allocated during the February 5 session for the development of project documentation that will provide a more accurate cost estimate.

The last renovation of the beach took place in 2019. The harsh marine environment has necessitated repairs to the ramp, steps to the beach, and the creation of a new deck. Additionally, the medical station and restroom will be renovated, along with updates to the sewage system.

«Our resort city is currently the only one with conditions for sea rehabilitation for people with limited mobility, including our veterans who have lost limbs in the war and children with disabilities,» said Gennady Trukhanov.

The mayor also reminded that a project for an inclusive sports playground at the «Dolphin» beach is planned for the new wellness season. This decision has been approved by the Executive Committee.

The Odessa City Council aims to create a robust rehabilitation base in Southern Ukraine. Under the program, over 20 million UAH will be allocated for purchasing equipment to equip rehabilitation departments in hospitals and 1.2 million UAH for setting up inclusive wards in other healthcare facilities.

Additionally, one of the program's points proposes expanding the capabilities of the city service «Social Taxi» for transporting individuals with mobility impairments.
