Japan Reaffirms Support for Ukraine's Energy Sector

During his visit to Ukraine, newly appointed Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwai emphasized Japan's commitment to continue supporting Ukraine, particularly in the energy sector, by providing a new aid package.

The Japanese government is a key partner of UNDP in Ukraine, consistently funding the procurement of equipment needed for the restoration of critical infrastructure.

Odesa has already received its first gas piston cogeneration unit with a capacity of 3.3 MW, which is currently being installed. The city is also expecting two more similar units, which will cover approximately one-third of the energy needs of its critical infrastructure for water supply, heating, and sewage systems.

The Mayor of Odesa noted that during the full-scale war, the city is actively building its own energy system even under difficult conditions and bombardments.

«We are immensely grateful to Japan, our sister city Yokohama, which was the first to support us, and to the UNDP team and all other countries that have joined us in building the foundation of our resilience together with the people of Odesa», - said Gennadii Trukhanov.
