The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a new procedure for maintaining a register of genetically modified organisms, aimed at enhancing consumer safety.
This information was disclosed by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The new register will serve as a unified state information system for accounting, monitoring, and storing data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.
The ministry explained that implementing such a register is a necessary step to ensure transparency in the biotechnology sector, improve consumer safety, and meet Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU.
Furthermore, the resolution harmonizes Ukrainian legislation with EU acts regarding GMO management, specifically Directive 2001/18/EC and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC regarding the operation of registers for recording information about GMOs.
This will create a regulated accounting and control system for GMOs that is similar to the European one, reducing risks to human health and the environment.
The resolution will take effect in September 2026, coinciding with a new relevant law regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
