Maintenance of Hydrological Structures in Odesa: Importance and Techniques

To ensure the efficient functioning of hydrological structures in Odesa, specialists from the «City Roads» utility company regularly carry out scheduled cleaning operations.

The buffer pond, Romanian canal, and Kuyalnik ditches are vital hydrological structures designed to drain rain and meltwater from the city streets.

Using specialized equipment, the municipal workers clear the canals and ponds of vegetation, debris, and sludge. Particular attention is given to the most silted areas, especially where the runoff from private residences occurs.

The Kuyalnik ditch, which spans 4650 meters, serves as the main drainage channel. It runs along Vapnyana and Khadzhibeyskaya streets, leading to the drainage pumping station, directing water away from the nearby neighborhoods.

Routine cleaning of stormwater inlets and sewer collectors throughout the city is also performed. Heavy machinery is deployed for this task, including excavators, graders, and specialized hydraulic units.

In cases of heavy rainfall, these operations are conducted on an emergency basis.
