In Odesa, due to unusual cold weather, the Black Sea is beginning to freeze. Social media and Telegram channels are buzzing with new photos and videos of the coastline, showcasing ice crusts and floating ice fragments.
Witnesses describe the scene as «like a frozen sea»: the waves move slower and collide with the ice. Local residents note that such occurrences are not common — this year’s winter is significantly colder compared to previous years. Some Odesans report that the first signs of ice formation appeared in the morning, and by evening, the ice cover had noticeably expanded.
The city council announced in the morning that the cold weather would persist throughout the day. According to the official forecast for Monday, January 19, 2026, Odesa is expected to experience cloudy weather with some clear spells, and no significant precipitation. The wind will be from the northeast at 9–14 m/s.
Morning air temperatures will hover around −8…−10 °C, while during the day, temperatures are expected to be around −2…−4 °C. The prolonged sub-zero temperatures combined with strong winds create conditions for ice formation along the Black Sea coast.
