In August 2025, a decision was made at a meeting of the Odesa City Council to hold a competition for the best project proposal for a monument to Lesya Ukrainka in Odesa, along with the improvement of the surrounding area.
The organizer of the competition is the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning, and Land Relations of the Odesa City Council.
The goal of the competition was to identify the best project proposal for a monument to the distinguished writer and poetess, as well as an architectural and spatial planning solution for the surrounding park area.
The competition was held in one round until January 30, 2026. Professional architects, sculptors, designers, students from architectural and construction higher education institutions, project organizations, author collectives, and specialists in urban planning and architecture were invited to participate. Specialists from other fields with experience in creating monumental art objects could also join the author collectives.
Currently, the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning, and Land Relations of the Odesa City Council has summarized the results of the competition for the best project proposal for the Lesya Ukrainka monument in Odesa.
A total of 12 project proposals were submitted to the competition.
The jury has recommended the project that took first place for the development of project and cost documentation and further implementation.
First place went to the project proposal under motto No. 201953 (authors – sculptor Mykola Bylyk, architects Andriy Korstruba, Maria Matushenko, Oleksandr Vovk).
Second place was awarded to the project proposal under motto No. 704020 (authors – sculptors Viktor Lipovka, Oleksandra Ruban, architects Andriy Danilenko, Kateryna Lipovka).
Third place went to the work under motto No. 250271 (authors – sculptor Anastasia Kozminska, architects Mykola Chepelev, Mykola Volkov).
According to the terms and program of the competition, monetary prizes will be awarded to the author collectives.
By the decision of the Odesa City Council “On the Erection of a Local-Value Monument to Lesya Ukrainka in Odesa,” the location for the monument has been determined – in the park at the intersection of Fontanska Road and Lesya Ukrainka Avenue (formerly Gagarin Avenue).
