Are School Holidays Really Shortened? Clarifying Rumors

Recently, social media and news outlets have been buzzing with claims that the government may shorten school holidays for students in 2025.

The Ministry of Education and Science has labeled these reports as "false," clarifying that the length of the academic year is determined individually by each school.

They acknowledged that according to the Cabinet's decree, the academic year is set to run from September 2, 2024, to June 30, 2025. However, these dates are limits, not mandatory deadlines.

“These dates, as well as the structure of the academic year and holiday schedules, are determined not by the government, but by the schools themselves. This is not a new practice; such flexibility has been allowed by current legislation for many years, even before the full-scale war began,” they added.

In reality, schools have the autonomy to decide when to conclude the academic year for their students.

In doing so, the pedagogical council considers:

  • overall educational load;
  • security situation in the region;
  • individual needs of students;
  • teachers' preparedness.
