From November 25 to 29, 2024, Odessa hosted an HIV testing week under the "HIV in Europe" initiative.
Supported by the Department of Health of the Odessa City Council and the City Center for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, free testing was offered to all interested individuals.
Rapid tests were utilized, providing results within 15 minutes. The city budget funds the purchase of these rapid HIV tests through the "Health" program.
As a result of the HIV testing week, 1,192 individuals were tested, with 8 receiving positive results.
Those who tested positive were referred to the City AIDS Center for diagnosis confirmation and treatment initiation.
Patients receive free antiretroviral medications that help minimize viral load in their blood.
Odessa has achieved significant treatment success, with 96% of patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy having an undetectable viral load. This allows people living with HIV to lead healthy lives without posing a risk to their partners.
The achievements in HIV detection and treatment highlight the successful implementation of the global Fast Track Cities initiative, which Odessa joined by signing the Paris Declaration.
Odessa's efforts in combating HIV have gained international recognition.
