Celebrating 160 Years of ONU with Blood Donation Initiative

The I. Mechnikov Odesa National University, with the support of the «Donor Odesa» project, organized an event titled «160 Blood Donors for the 160th Anniversary of ONU».

The event saw participation from the university administration, trade union committees of staff and students. Medical professionals from the Odesa regional blood transfusion station facilitated the blood donations.

The initiative was conducted in two phases, with the first concluding in spring. The second phase coincided with World Kindness Day in November. On November 13 and 14, ONU representatives donated blood at two locations: in the Kyiv district, on the Faculty of Hydrometeorology and Ecology, and in the Primorsky district, at the Department of Health and Safety.

“The donation event continued even during the blackout. Despite power outages at one location, we activated a generator to ensure the necessary equipment operated. With our blood, we can support our defenders who risk their lives and health to safeguard our independence and lives in Ukraine,” stated Vadim Penov, the initiative's originator and associate professor at the Department of Physiology, Health, and Safety.

Thanks to collective efforts, over 170 people donated blood at ONU. The initiative attracted not only students and staff but also their family members who expressed a desire to contribute to Ukraine's support.

Moreover, ONU students and faculty engaged in significant outreach, promoting the importance of blood donation on social media.

Every blood donation can save up to three lives.
Kindness starts with us. Kindness saves lives.
