MariLuise Beck, a German politician and director of the Center for Liberal Modernity for Eastern and Central Europe, has been awarded the Honorary Certificate from the Odessa Mayor for her active humanitarian work, support for the residents during wartime, and strengthening international cooperation.
She initiated the 'Against Oblivion' memorial project on Lustdorf Road, a site where more than 25,000 people, mostly of Jewish and Romani descent, were burned alive in 1941.
A grant of one million euros was secured for its implementation. However, due to the war, the work had to be postponed, and funds redirected to humanitarian needs of the city.
As a result, Odessa received transportation, specialized equipment, generators, medical supplies, and other critically important resources.
The city government expresses gratitude for the support and hopes to continue implementing pre-war projects and fostering cooperation for Odessa's development.
