In early October, during a patrol, the water police of the Izmail district, together with the Odessa fish protection patrol, discovered a 63-year-old man on the shore of Katlabug Lake near the village of Utkonosivka unloading bioresources from a boat, caught using prohibited nets.
This was reported by the police.
The investigators who arrived at the scene confiscated a boat, 150-meter-long gill nets, and 69 fish from the violator, including crucian carp, carp, silver carp, bream, and pike-perch. During the preliminary investigation, the police transferred the illegal catch to a specialized enterprise for safekeeping.
According to the results of the engineering and ecological examination, the damage caused to the state amounted to nearly 209 thousand hryvnias.
The fisherman did not deny his guilt and explained that he was aware of the prohibition on catching bioresources with gill nets but still used them for personal needs.
During the preliminary investigation, conducted under the procedural guidance of the Izmail District Prosecutor's Office, the police established all circumstances of the violation, collected sufficient evidence, and brought charges against the individual for illegal fishing that caused significant harm. The law enforcement officers submitted the indictment to the court under part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The maximum penalty provided by its sanction is three years of restriction of liberty.
