Wikipedia, the globally recognized online encyclopedia, is actively integrating artificial intelligence technologies, not to replace volunteers but to ease their workload. This was announced by the Wikimedia Foundation, outlining its strategy for AI implementation.

"The volunteer community behind Wikipedia is an irreplaceable part of its success. For nearly two decades, editors have collaborated to create the largest encyclopedia in history. No one can replicate their dedication and effort toward accurate knowledge," the statement reads.

With this approach, Wikipedia plans to utilize artificial intelligence not to substitute humans but to streamline specific processes where generative AI has shown promise. For instance, content moderation will become more automated, reducing the routine in maintaining information quality. The aim is also to enhance data accessibility on the platform, "to allow more time for human interaction, discussions, and reaching consensus."

Additionally, artificial intelligence will assist editors in sharing local knowledge and context, automating translation and adaptation processes. There are also plans to employ AI for improving new volunteer onboarding through mentorship systems.
