Microsoft has announced major updates that will affect its Authenticator app.
Starting in June 2025, the app will no longer store passwords, and from July, it will cease to autofill passwords. By August, access to saved passwords will be restricted, meaning all generated passwords will be deleted. Access to any remaining passwords and autofill features will only be available through the Microsoft Edge browser. Nevertheless, the Authenticator will continue to support access keys.
Users are strongly advised to back up all passwords to prevent loss of access to crucial accounts, such as email and banking services. Moreover, from July, all payment information will be removed from the app.
For autofilling passwords, Microsoft also recommends using alternative password managers, such as Google Password Manager or iCloud Keychain.
