Changes in Microsoft Authenticator: New Security Guidelines

Microsoft has announced significant updates to its Authenticator app. Starting June 2025, users will be prohibited from adding new passwords to the app. Password autofill functionality through Authenticator will be disabled from July, and by August, all saved passwords will be deleted. Additionally, all payment information stored in the app will also be erased.

However, the company assured that passkeys will remain available in the app, allowing users to securely access services without needing to remember complex passwords.

For users staying within the Microsoft ecosystem, saved passwords can be viewed and utilized through the Microsoft Edge browser, which features its own password manager with autofill capabilities. Users not using Edge are encouraged to consider alternative password managers such as 1Password, LastPass, Bitwarden, and others that are compatible with various platforms.

These changes are part of Microsoft's strategy to enhance security and transition to modern authentication methods that minimize risks associated with password theft. Passkeys supported in Authenticator are regarded as more secure and user-friendly.

Users are advised to export their passwords from Microsoft Authenticator to another manager in advance to avoid losing access to important accounts after August 2025.
