OpenAI has unveiled its innovative ChatGPT Agent feature — a virtual assistant capable of executing complex tasks on a computer. This feature is already available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team users, with a rollout for corporate accounts expected by the end of summer.
Unlike traditional chatbots, the Agent can integrate with calendars, create presentations, analyze documents, make online purchases, schedule meetings, and perform routine tasks such as restaurant reservations. It has access to a virtual environment, including a browser, terminal, file system, and other tools, enabling it to autonomously handle requests.
This feature is based on a new model that can work with multiple tools simultaneously. The development team has combined efforts from the Deep Research and Operator projects; however, unlike the latter, the Agent not only provides consulting but also executes actions independently in a virtual setting. The Operator, on the other hand, requires human involvement in task execution.
ChatGPT Agent can:
- Analyze calendars and organize events;
- Create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations;
- Work with user files;
- Conduct searches and make bookings through third-party services;
- Generate reports and process web data.
Before performing irreversible actions, such as sending an email or placing an order, the tool requires confirmation. Some features, including transactions, are currently limited, and certain websites open in a watch mode.
In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, this feature is not yet available. OpenAI has not provided specific timelines for launch in these regions.
This new tool emerges amidst growing competition in the AI agent space. Companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Anthropic, and startups like Klarna are already implementing similar solutions. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Agent represents a step towards an AI model that not only consults but also performs real tasks.
