Exploring New Learning Paths with Google

Google has unveiled its latest tool called Guided Learning within the Gemini chatbot, designed for step-by-step education for students. This feature competes with the recently launched ChatGPT Study mode by OpenAI, as reported by Fast Company.

Unlike conventional chatbots that provide instant responses, Guided Learning breaks down complex queries into smaller components for a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Rather than offering direct answers, the system guides users towards comprehension through a series of well-crafted questions. This tool addresses concerns in the education sector about chatbots potentially undermining learning by providing quick, surface-level responses.

Students can reach out to the AI with questions anytime. In response, Guided Learning typically provides contextual hints that encourage independent exploration of answers, often rephrasing the query instead of solving it immediately. If a student strays off-topic, the AI acknowledges their interest but gently redirects them back to the main subject.

While most responses from Guided Learning are text-based, some queries generate illustrations and suggest relevant YouTube videos from educational experts. Students can upload their notes or course syllabi, allowing the tool to tailor interactions to the material being studied.

The launch of Guided Learning is part of Google’s $1 billion educational initiative over three years aimed at enhancing AI in education. College students aged 18 and over in the US, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil will receive free 12-month access to the Google AI Pro plan.

The Google AI for Education Accelerator program will provide free AI training, Google Career certificates, and advanced AI tools to college students nationwide. Over 100 universities representing millions of students have already enrolled in the program.
