Meta is preparing to make a significant move into the robotics sector, aiming to become the "Android for robots". According to sources, the company is developing a robot named Metabot, but the main focus is on creating a software platform that can be licensed by other manufacturers.
Andrew Bosworth, Meta's CTO, stated that software is the "bottleneck" in robotics development. The company has brought together a team led by former Cruise CEO Mark Whitten and resources from Superintelligence Labs to develop what's being called a "global model". This model aims to enable robots to perform complex physical actions, starting with hand movement animation and progressing to multi-step tasks.
Back in early 2025, Meta considered creating a household robot for chores like cleaning or folding laundry. However, this is still in the early research stages.
Meta is not alone in envisioning a future with domestic robots. Apple is working on a device with a robotic arm and display, while Tesla regularly showcases its humanoid Optimus in controlled environments.
If Meta's strategy succeeds, it could become a key supplier of the "operating system" for robots, much like Google was for smartphones. However, Google is also not lagging, as its research division DeepMind regularly presents new developments in the robotics field. Recently, for instance, they trained their robots to "Google" and share knowledge with each other.
