Beware of Fire: The Dangers of Burning Leaves

Every autumn and spring, cases of burning dry leaves, grass, and branches are reported in the city.

The Odessa City Council once again reminds that burning dry leaves and grass is strictly prohibited in Ukraine and is punishable by administrative fines, and in some cases, criminal liability. This practice harms health, the environment, and poses a threat to life.

It is also prohibited to throw leaves and cut branches into garbage containers or leave them beside them.

There is a myth that burning can improve yield. However, this is not true.
Firstly, beneficial microflora involved in crucial biological processes is destroyed. The fertile soil takes 5–6 years to recover under such conditions.

Secondly, harmful substances that negatively affect respiratory health are released into the air during burning.

Thirdly, burning grass does NOT warm the soil, does NOT enrich it with ash, and does NOT contribute to the growth of new grass.

Moreover, a small fire can escalate into a large blaze, causing destruction and increasing the workload for emergency services.

It is better to compost leaves; this is not only a civilized way to handle organic waste but also a resourceful method to create excellent fertilizer.
