Innovative Energy Solutions for Odesa: A New Era Begins

The first phase of building a new energy generation system based on gas engine cogeneration plants has begun in Odesa.

This project is being implemented in partnership with UNDP and representatives from the embassies of Japan, Norway, and Sweden as part of the decentralization of the city's energy network.

The first cogeneration unit has already been installed at one of Odesa's boiler houses. As Vice Mayor Hanna Pozdnyakova noted, cogeneration units are crucial for the heating sector due to their independence from central energy supplies, high energy efficiency, and rapid adaptation and recovery capabilities. They can start quickly, allowing for the prompt restoration of heat supply to homes.

During the handover ceremony of the gas engine power plant to the municipal enterprise "Odesa Heating Supply," attendees included: UNDP's Permanent Representative in Ukraine, Mr. Yako Silje, the Deputy Head of the Norwegian Embassy in Ukraine, Mr. Jan Flete, the Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. Masashi Nakagome (via video call), the Swedish Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. Martin Oberg, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Mykola Kolisnyk (via video call), and the head of the UNDP Green Energy Recovery Program, Yulia Rybak.

«I am particularly grateful to our partners from Yokohama, with whom I signed a Memorandum in March 2023, enabling Odesa to receive the necessary equipment. Thanks to the support from Japan, Norway, and Sweden, we have not only installed the first unit but also prepared sites for the next ones. From now on, we will be able to supply electricity to heating, water supply, and sewage facilities», - stated Hennadiy Trukhanov.

This project will help Odesa become more resilient to energy challenges faced by its residents, especially during previous blackouts.

By the end of the year, two more such machines are expected to be delivered. All preparatory work for their installation has been completed.
