A delegation from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ukraine, led by humanitarian coordinator Mr. Matthias Schmale, has arrived in Odesa.
The purpose of the visit is to evaluate the current humanitarian situation and discuss further collaboration.
On October 15, 2024, during a meeting, Acting Mayor Oleksandr Filatov and advisor Veronika Etnarovych discussed with Mr. Schmale issues of security and humanitarian needs, support for internally displaced persons, and preparations for the winter season.
The parties also reviewed plans for cooperation with charitable organizations and international partners.
The delegation members visited the city’s Social and Psychological Assistance Center, where around 100 displaced individuals currently reside.
The UN representatives examined the living conditions and spoke with both the displaced persons and the Center's staff.
Mr. Matthias Schmale noted that the Center, which offers comfortable living conditions for those forced to leave their homes, is one of the best in Ukraine.
On October 16, the delegation visited 6 Sofiivska Street, where emergency repair work is being conducted on the roof of a residential building through collaboration with charitable organizations.
Concluding the visit, Matthias Schmale expressed solidarity with Ukrainians and emphasized the importance of international support for stability and safety of the population amid the ongoing conflict.
«I was very pleased to hear the priorities of the city authorities – we talked about energy infrastructure needs, winter preparation, and assistance to internally displaced persons,» Mr. Schmale stated.
