Debate on Lesya Ukrainka Monument in Odesa

The city of Odesa is currently engaged in a lively debate over the placement of a monument dedicated to Lesya Ukrainka. City council members are now considering the possibility of installing the monument in the Cosmonauts Park, which is set to be named after the renowned poetess.

It is noteworthy that the decision to establish a monument in honor of Lesya Ukrainka was approved by the culture, tourism, and international relations committee in the spring. Various locations have been proposed, including Cosmonauts Park, Heroes Avenue, and Shevchenko Park.

Members of the historical and toponymic commission reported that Shevchenko Park is not a suitable location due to the proximity of an underground toilet, above which a café is currently being constructed.

“This location in Shevchenko Park is not ideal. A spot near the Lanzheron arch was suggested. There are both positive and negative aspects. There used to be an underground toilet nearby, which has been purchased, and a café was planned at that site. Whether the café will be there or not, it is very close to the monument,” said a member of the commission.

At this point, the elected officials are considering placing the Lesya Ukrainka monument in Cosmonauts Park, near the Church of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which will be built on the site of an existing structure.
