Fire Safety Challenges in Ukraine

In Ukraine, an average of 240 fires are reported daily, resulting in approximately four fatalities and five injuries.

This was reported by Roman Tsiren, head of the Department of Emergency Situations Prevention at the State Emergency Service, during a briefing at the "Media Center Ukraine".

According to Tsiren, analyzing these figures annually reveals a "concerning trend".

"Every year, around two thousand citizens die from fires, and five thousand may suffer injuries," – noted the representative of the SES.

The SES also urged Ukrainians to refrain from lighting fires in nature during the Easter celebrations.

"Our country has been severely affected by explosive remnants. Some areas have been liberated, but still contain many hazardous items.

Especially if forests and parks are to be used, I do not recommend lighting fires, as this year has seen a significant increase in wildfires. We have recorded a 68% rise in fires in ecosystems," – explained Roman Tsiren.

Moreover, the losses from emergencies include fatalities and injuries resulting from road accidents, said Tsiren.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, nearly 26 thousand accidents with victims occurred in 2024. Over 3.2 thousand people died and more than 32 thousand were injured, which is a 5-9% increase compared to 2023.

As reported by Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, the first deputy head of the patrol police department, the most common cause of accidents with casualties is speeding, accounting for nearly 39.4% of cases.

Other frequent causes of accidents were violations of maneuvering rules, crossing intersections and pedestrian crossings, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

"If we add the road traffic incidents, from which six thousand of our citizens perish each year, these are colossal losses that we are enduring," – concluded the head of the emergency prevention department.

It is worth noting that only 55 Ukrainians lost their lives due to domestic fires in the first six days of 2025. Fires were caused by short circuits, non-compliance with heating device regulations, and careless handling of fire, including smoking in bed while intoxicated.
