In 2025, six young individuals lost their lives in Ukraine due to the perilous activity known as "train surfing." Eight more sustained injuries.
This information was shared by Vitaliy Romanov, deputy head of the juvenile police, during a broadcast on "Public TV."
Train surfing is a term that describes the dangerous antics of teenagers on railway cars, where they climb onto the roofs to take videos or photos. Another variation of this activity involves hanging onto the sides of moving trains.
"The consequences of this behavior can be fatal; therefore, we continually emphasize the need for preventive measures to avoid such incidents," noted Romanov.
He recounted two accidents that occurred on the same day in Volyn – April 20. One involved a 16-year-old boy who climbed onto a train car.
Hours later, a 13-year-old boy attempted to film a video on the roof of a train car and ascended using a ladder, where he was electrocuted.
"In this case, the child suffered 80% burns over his body, and his condition is critical; doctors are fighting for his life," Romanov stated.
He also added that "train surfing" is not just a phenomenon in Ukraine but is prevalent in other countries as well. Often, children from well-off families who have not previously come to the attention of law enforcement are injured.
Remember, on March 12 in Kyiv, a 12-year-old boy climbed onto an electric train car and suffered severe burns from electrocution. Doctors struggled for five days to save him, but the teenager passed away.
