New Educational Program for High Schools in Ukraine

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has approved a new educational program for high schools. This document is a significant step in the reform of education.

A key aspect of the program is to give students in grades 10-12 the ability to choose their educational path.

Choosing an Educational Profile. Students can select from a package of subjects and courses that make up their chosen profile. For example, a student may choose a mathematical profile and study mathematics at an advanced level along with other required subjects.

Choosing Additional Courses. Students can select courses within their profile that will enhance their knowledge and skills. For instance, a combinatorial analysis course for those in the mathematical profile.

Choosing Non-Profile Subjects. Students may choose subjects and courses outside of their profile for their comprehensive development. For example, a student in the mathematical profile may choose a course in drama and theater.

The program also includes mandatory subjects for all students that are required for the state final certification after grade 12 (in the format of ZNO/NMT).

What else does the new educational program offer?

  • The ability to form flexible groups for elective subjects and courses.
  • A reduction in the number of compulsory subjects. For example, in grade 12, students may study only 5-8 subjects instead of 14.
  • Freedom for schools to create programs for non-profile subjects at their discretion.

How many hours will be allocated for different educational fields?

The program includes typical learning plans for three main clusters:

  • Linguistic and Literary
  • Social and Humanitarian
  • STEM

Within these clusters, lyceums will be able to form various profiles.

Grade 10 — Profile-Adaptation Cycle (students can change profiles)

  • The number of hours for compulsory educational components in the first semester of grade 10 will be the same for all students, allowing them to adapt to new learning formats.
  • Students will have time for elective subjects in the first semester.
  • In the second semester, the number of hours for profile subjects will increase.

Grades 11-12 — Profile Cycle

  • The educational plan will have more hours allocated for studying the chosen profile and elective subjects.
  • Every year, the number of such hours will increase, while the hours for compulsory subjects will decrease.
