March 21 is celebrated worldwide as the day for raising awareness about individuals with Down syndrome.
In Odessa, there are over 150 individuals with this condition. To raise public awareness and combat stereotypes, a photo exhibition has been organized at the Integrated Social Services Center featuring photos of local families with members who have this genetic anomaly.
Elena Kitayskaya, the director of the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the Odessa City Council, welcomed the participants, wishing everyone peace and harmony.
Lydia Ostroglyadova, the mother of two children with Down syndrome, expressed her gratitude for the attention and support regarding issues faced by individuals with disabilities.
The event was also attended by representatives of organizations such as “Future Guarantee,” “Special Children,” and “Healthy Society.”
At the end of the meeting, representatives from the Department of Labor and Social Policy presented special gifts to notable guests.
Additionally, employees from the local social protection offices participated in the global flashmob “Colorful Socks.” In a show of support for individuals with Down syndrome, they attached an odd number of colorful socks to their outerwear as a symbol of the extra chromosome.
