Roman Legionnaires in Odessa: A Journey into History

Roman legionnaires have been spotted on Deribasivska Street in Odessa, where they will stay for two days. Helmets, armor, weapons, and traditions are all on display. This is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of ancient Roman life.

Journalists visited the site and captured the preparations for the event.

Romans Camped Outdoors

Romans are crafting coins and demonstrating weaponry right in the heart of Odessa. A genuine Roman camp is now set up on Deribasivska, which will remain for two days. Currently, preparations are underway: tents are being erected, armor is laid out, and costumes are being fitted. Tomorrow, everything will be ready for visitors.

"We planned to start our Roman camp here, but the weather interfered. Tomorrow it will operate at full capacity. We know that Romans were present in the Odessa region, so we are recreating their history here," said organizer Anatoliy Provchenko.

Authentic Costumes

The preparations are meticulously planned, from the locations to the costumes, with details that carry their own historical significance. Some items even have "passports" confirming their authenticity, including archaeological sources.

"I am wearing a lorica segmentata, the armor of a Roman soldier. This is a Gladius sword - short and effective for thrusting attacks. The shield is a scutum. This is exactly how the Roman army looked during the time of Christ," remarked reenactor Alexander.

On Saturday and most of Sunday, everyone interested can experience being part of the camp, learn about armor and weapons, and even feel like a legionnaire.

Grand Reenactment

The grand finale will be a large Easter reenactment, held for over 12 years. This year it takes on special significance, inviting deeper reflection on events from two millennia ago. In the heart of modern Odessa, the world of antiquity will come alive, where every movement, costume, or dialogue is not just decoration, but an attempt to feel the flow of history.

"There will be many scenes throughout Deribasivska where various events will take place. It all begins with the grand entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a live donkey," explained organizer Anatoliy.

Historical reenactment is not just a spectacular event, but a true journey through time, allowing citizens and guests of Odessa to not only observe but also personally touch the past and feel the rhythm of life in the Roman legion.
