The actions of an official resulted in multiple incidents of waste self-ignition and significant fires that took over a week to extinguish. The accused faces up to five years in prison, as reported by the police.
Investigators established that the director of a municipal enterprise responsible for collecting household waste failed to maintain the landfill assigned to the company properly. Specifically, the official did not take any measures to implement systems for the extraction and disposal of biogas generated from waste decomposition and did not provide security for the landfill.
This neglect led to repeated self-ignition of waste, spreading fires over a large area, which firefighters took over a week to extinguish. According to expert conclusions, the damage caused to the environment due to pollutant emissions into the atmosphere exceeded 4.75 million UAH.
"After gathering sufficient evidence, investigators charged the suspect under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: negligence (Part 2, Article 367) and air pollution with substances harmful to human life, health, and the environment due to violations of special rules, creating danger to human life and health, as well as other serious consequences (Part 2, Article 241)" - said Andriy Donets, head of the Odesa District Police Department No. 2.
«For the committed acts, the accused faces imprisonment for up to five years, along with a prohibition on holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities for up to three years. The pre-trial investigation, conducted under the procedural guidance of the Bilyaivka District Prosecutor's Office, has been completed, and the indictment has been sent to court», - added Police Colonel Andriy Donets.
