Justice Served: Assailant to Face Trial

The assailant involved in the crime is now awaiting trial. He risks a lengthy prison sentence and asset confiscation.

The incident occurred in December of last year. During the preliminary investigation overseen by the Primorsky District Prosecutor's Office in Odessa, police discovered the following. The perpetrator snatched a mobile phone from a 36-year-old military man at Kulikovo Field and attempted to flee. The victim, trying to reclaim his device, chased the assailant and caught up with him in a park on Italian Boulevard. However, the perpetrator stabbed the man several times and also took his backpack containing money, a passport, and military ID. The total amount of damages was nearly 13,000 hryvnias.

Medics called by bystanders hospitalized the victim with a penetrating abdominal wound and stab wounds to the neck and arm. According to the forensic medical examination, some of the injuries are classified as serious.

Police quickly identified and apprehended the criminal, who turned out to be an outsider with four prior convictions for theft and robbery. During the investigative measures, law enforcement recovered some of the stolen property and tools used in the crime.

«We have gathered sufficient evidence and charged the suspect with assault with the intent to seize someone else's property, combined with violence dangerous to the life or health of the victim. This crime was committed under martial law, and also involved the illegal seizure of a passport and other important personal documents. These offenses are classified under Part 4 of Article 187 and Part 3 of Article 357 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The maximum penalty for these crimes is up to 15 years of imprisonment with asset confiscation. At our request, the court has chosen a preventive measure of detention for the offender. We have already submitted the indictment to the court,» said investigator Marina Yermolenko from the Odessa District Police Department No. 1.
