A 20-year-old resident of Podilskyi district has received a court sentence for the cruel treatment of a neighbor's dog, which led to the animal's death.
This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa region. A reconciliation agreement was reached between the offender and the victim. The young man will face punishment in the form of limited freedom with a probation period.
In February of this year, a resident of one of the villages in the Ananyiv community contacted the police, reporting that an unidentified person killed her dog at her residence and disposed of the body in an abandoned well.
Police recovered two bloody and broken kitchen knives from the crime scene, which were sent for forensic examination along with the animal's body. According to the expert's conclusion, the dog's death was due to blood loss caused by cuts to the head and neck.
Police established that the crime involved a 20-year-old local resident. The young man claimed that the victim's dog was causing damage to his parents' property. He decided not to report this to the police, instead entering the unguarded area of the woman's property and inflicted injuries on the restrained dog with two knives he brought along, later discarding the animal into the well.
Investigators charged the defendant under part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for cruel treatment of vertebrate animals resulting in death.
During the pre-trial investigation, the accused admitted his guilt and reached a reconciliation agreement with the dog's owner, which, along with the indictment, was submitted to the court.
The court found the defendant guilty, approved the reconciliation agreement, and sentenced him to one year of limited freedom with a one-year probation period. During the probation period, the convicted person must periodically report to the probation authority, notify them of any changes in residence, work, or education, and seek permission for travel outside Ukraine.
