In February 2025, the inaugural Winter Invictus Games will take place in Vancouver, marking a significant milestone for veterans globally. On January 29, veteran Yevhen Kaus was announced as a member of the National Team representing Ukraine during the Barrier-Free Council meeting.
Yevhen Kaus — a certified coach in adaptive rowing, is affiliated with the Federation of Marine Multi-Sports of Ukraine in the Odessa region.
During the full-scale war, Yevhen sustained life-altering injuries, losing both legs. He will compete in three sports at the Vancouver Games: curling, biathlon, and skeleton.
Joining him from the Odessa region are:
- Oleksiy Vasyliev, a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, wounded in March 2023 while on duty in Bakhmut;
- Illia Pylypenko, a sailor of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, injured in September 2022 near Bilohirka due to a tank landmine explosion;
- Oleksiy Prytula, a senior soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, wounded in September 2022 in the vicinity of Yamplivka.
The Invictus Games is the world's largest international event for service members and veterans who have sustained injuries while on duty.
Ukraine's participation in the 2025 Games will be its fifth, and the Vancouver-Whistler 2025 Games will be the first-ever hybrid winter games.
Veterans will compete in swimming, rowing on ergometers, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby, along with new winter sports, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country skiing, skeleton, and wheelchair curling.
