On December 18, 2024, the heart of Ukrainian athlete and 1980 Olympic participant Sergey Oleksiyovych Olizarenko stopped beating.

At the 1980 Olympics, Sergey competed in the 3000 meters steeplechase, finishing third in the semifinals with a time of 8:34.2, which allowed him to qualify for the final. Unfortunately, he could not compete in the final due to an Achilles tendon injury.

He was married to Olympic champion Nadia Olizarenko.

The Odessa City Council and the sports community of Odessa express their heartfelt condolences to the family of Sergey Oleksiyovych during this difficult time.

Farewell to Sergey Oleksiyovych will take place on December 21, 2024: at 10:30 – a service at the Holy Assumption Cathedral (70 Preobrazhenska St.), at 12:00 - cremation at the Tairova cemetery crematorium.
