The Ministry of Digital Transformation, in collaboration with the mobile operator "Kyivstar", is set to develop a new large language model for the Ukrainian language using Google's Gemma 3 technology. This was announced by Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Fedorov emphasized that the goal is for Ukraine to become one of the top countries in the world in artificial intelligence by 2030, and creating a native language model is a significant step towards this objective.
The selection of Google's Gemma as the foundation for the Ukrainian model is backed by several advantages:
- an optimal balance of performance and resources;
- it already supports the Ukrainian language;
- it handles not only text but also images;
- it has served as the basis for the best Ukrainian language models.
The new Ukrainian LLM will lay the groundwork for the strategic development of AI in Ukraine, as the quality and security of public services depend on the effectiveness of the LLM. The next step is to train Gemma on Ukrainian texts and test the model through benchmarks.
