Protecting Chestnuts from Pests

In recent years, there has been an increase in cases of chestnuts being affected by a dangerous pest - the leaf miner. Caterpillars feed inside the leaves, leading to severe damage to the plants.

To prevent negative consequences, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise "Miskzelentrust" have been annually vaccinating chestnuts with a special solution since 2017.

To administer the injection into the tree's vascular system, a small hole is made, allowing the medication to spread into the leaves, making them inedible for the pest. This results in the death of the caterpillars.

The mixture of insecticides and fungicides that is injected is intolerable for the chestnut leaf miner, making this method effective for both prevention and control of existing pests.

According to the Municipal Enterprise "Miskzelentrust", this method of pest control is permitted in urban areas as it is completely safe for the environment.

This year, 995 chestnuts are scheduled for vaccination.

The chestnut leaf miner is one of the main dangerous pests affecting horse chestnut trees, causing significant harm to urban greenery. The caterpillars feed on the sap and tissues of the leaves, which can lead to the tree's death. During the growing season, moths can produce up to three generations.
In addition to the damage caused, the leaf miner is a vector for viral infections, which can lead to the trees being infected with other diseases.
Research has shown that the most effective way to combat the leaf miner is through injections into the tree trunk, effectively addressing both the leaf miner and other pests and diseases that parasitize trees.
