In Odesa, an innovative vaccination program for children against the human papillomavirus (HPV) is being implemented with funds from the city budget. This vaccination is crucial for preventing cancer and other reproductive system diseases in adulthood.
The HPV vaccine is most effective for children aged 9 to 14, before they begin sexual activity. During a vaccination conference, Levon Nikogosyan, the director of the Odesa City Health Department, reported that since October 2023, 1590 children have been vaccinated, with 858 completing the full course of two doses. By the end of the year, approximately 1500 more vaccinations are planned.
Currently, Odesa is the only city in Ukraine where free HPV vaccinations are provided for both girls and boys.
“Vaccination is one of humanity's greatest inventions that has saved countless lives. I urge all parents to responsibly care for their children's health and to ensure they receive all necessary vaccinations on time,” Levon Nikogosyan emphasized.
A specialized vaccination school took place on November 6, 2024, supported by the Odesa City Health Department and the Odesa Regional Family Medicine Association. The school involved pediatricians, family doctors, therapists, immunologists, allergists, infectious disease specialists, and professionals from various fields.
Healthcare professionals highlighted the importance of timely planned vaccinations for children to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases and to maintain a favorable epidemiological situation in Odesa and Ukraine at large.
Additional vaccinations not included in the National Vaccination Calendar but recommended, such as those against pneumococcal infections, were also discussed. Special attention was given during the school to effective communication between medical staff and parents, as well as addressing common questions regarding vaccination.
