Alongside the Ukrainian Women's Congress in Kyiv, Odesa hosts a conference celebrating the 140th anniversary of the women's movement in Ukraine entitled «Empowering Women: The Movement in Ukraine».
The Mayor of Odesa, Gennadiy Trukhanov, highlighted the crucial role women play across various sectors, including military and political spheres, as well as in preserving cultural heritage.
Sabin Fraiser Gunesh, representative of UN Women Ukraine, spoke about the organization's support for women in Ukraine and their active role in business creation:
"Women in Ukraine are empowered to take action. Last year, for instance, women started every second new business in the country. Many are stepping into significant roles, filling in for men who are at the frontlines, and around 60,000 women are currently serving in the security and defense forces."
The conference brought together historians, activists, military personnel, and representatives from international organizations to discuss pressing issues.
Key topics included the historical context of the women's movement in Ukraine, contemporary challenges, and the prospects of rebuilding after the conflict.
