A worrying incident occurred recently in a school located in the Podilsk district of Odesa.
Upon responding to a report of an explosion from an unidentified object, police discovered that a nine-year-old girl had brought a training grenade to school to show off to her friends. During playtime, a boy accidentally pulled the pin from the grenade, which caused it to explode. The boy sustained minor scratches and did not require medical assistance. No one else was harmed.
Investigators found that a relative had given the grenade to the girl, and her parents failed to monitor her bringing such a dangerous object to school. Administrative materials were drawn up against the girl's mother under part 1 of article 184 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses (failure of parents or guardians to fulfill their duties regarding child upbringing). This offense is punishable by a warning or a fine of up to 1700 hryvnias.
Police urge adults to refrain from engaging in irresponsible behavior that could put children at risk. Parents are reminded to pay close attention to their children: monitor where, how, and with whom they spend their free time, and educate them about the dangers posed by unknown objects that may conceal explosive substances.
