A striking new mural has appeared on the Teschin Bridge in Odesa, becoming a symbol of resilience and resistance against Russian aggression. The artist has portrayed Cossack Mamai, not as a folkloric character, but as a modern Ukrainian warrior.
According to the National Resistance Center, this powerful visual representation of Ukrainian struggle was created by artist Mykhailo Skop. In the hands of the Cossack is a trident, with shadows of Cossacks who once stormed Khadjibey surrounding him. Beneath the hero's feet lies the Moscow Leviathan, being overcome by the symbols of Odesa and Ukraine.
This mural is part of the "Resistance Murals" series, making it the third such artwork in the city that communicates the message of Ukrainian resistance.
"The new mural in Odesa – Cossack Mamai has returned to inspire resistance," states the National Resistance Center's Facebook page.
The project organizers emphasize the symbolic importance of the work: "This is not just a folkloric hero. It is the image of a modern Ukrainian warrior." The artist skillfully intertwined historical memory with the contemporary context of the fight for independence.
Details of the composition draw particular attention. The shadows of Cossacks who stormed Khadjibey remind us of Odesa's heroic past, when the city was captured by Ukrainian warriors. The depiction of the Moscow Leviathan beneath the Cossack symbolizes victory over the enemy.
"Memory is a weapon," the project authors note, highlighting the significance of historical consciousness in the current struggle.
The "Resistance Murals" series aims not only to beautify urban walls but also to uplift the fighting spirit of Odesans and remind them of Ukraine's heroic history. Each mural becomes a part of the cultural front in the war against Russian aggression.
"Odesa speaks the language of the streets – and each of these images strikes at the enemy," summarize the project organizers.
