A 22-year-old man attempted to bribe a border guard with $7,500 to illegally exit Ukraine along with two acquaintances. Police arrested the organizer of the scheme. Investigators charged him with multiple offenses under the Criminal Code of Ukraine, facing potential imprisonment and asset confiscation.
The young man, from Mykolaiv region, offered a bribe to the border guard to facilitate crossing the state border of Ukraine outside official checkpoints. He promised $1,000 for each client and $1,500 after successful completion of the scheme, totaling $7,500.
However, the border guard reported the offer to his superiors. Subsequently, the investigators from the Rozdilna District Police Department, along with officers from the internal security department of the State Border Guard Service, documented and halted the crime.
The arrest took place in a village in Rozdilna District as the young man, along with his two clients, entered the border guard's vehicle and handed over $3,000 as an advance payment. Investigators seized the money as evidence, along with the vehicles used to arrive at the destination.
“We have charged the suspect with organizing the illegal transport of individuals across the state border of Ukraine by providing bribes to officials. Under the Criminal Code of Ukraine, penalties for these offenses can be up to eight years in prison with asset confiscation. The court has chosen to remand the suspect in custody with the possibility of bail set at 514,760 UAH. The investigation is ongoing,” stated senior investigator Rimma Postnova.
Regarding the men who attempted to illegally cross the state border, border guards have drawn up protocols under Article 204-1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. The cases have been forwarded to court. The offenders face fines or administrative detention.
